Late last month, a woman who had been vacationing in Kenya – where she collected a bunch of giraffe poop – tried to bring the feces back to the U.S.
When she arrived at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, she told a customs agent she was going to make a necklace out of it.
“Apparently when she is at home she makes jewelry out of moose droppings so when she saw giraffe droppings while on safari she thought that would be a unique addition to her craftwork I guess,” a customs official told MPR News. The publication added that she could have obtained permits to bring it back legally.
“…agriculture specialists destroyed the giraffe poop,” reports AP News.
“There is a real danger with bringing fecal matter into the U.S.,” Customs and Border Protection’s Chicago field Director LaFonda D. Sutton-Burke said in a statement, alluding to the various diseases the jewelry maker could have spread.
The woman, who has not been identified, will not face any punishment, since she was transparent about what she had in her luggage.
It seems like there’s a whole market for poop jewelry. Here’s an Etsy store that sells necklaces made from both moose and deer poop.
