The least expensive current real estate listing in Imperial Beach, CA is a 1 bed, 1 bath condo for $419,000, according to Realtor.com. Single-family homes are going for as much as $2.5 million, like this new construction property which also has a monthly HOA fee of $300.

You would think prices like these would come with a decent quality of life, but according to a recent report by San Diego State University, sewage from the Tijuana River has been emptying out into the Pacific Ocean on the coast of Imperial Beach for years, causing a “persistent environmental and public health threat” which, as one local resident recently told CBS News, is “akin to being trapped in a portable toilet.” The smell is awful.

While the official website for the City of Imperial Beach, CA boasts of its “3.5 miles of uncrowded, white sand beaches and big waves,” CBS News reports that there have been beach closures for 700 consecutive days.

On Monday, Fox 5 San Diego reported that deputies “had to escort a curious seal back into the water after it made it onto the boardwalk in Imperial Beach,” almost succeeding in its attempt to escape.

“Moved to San Diego in June. Everyone says don’t go to IB cuz it’s gross and has sewage runoff apparently. I am learning to surf and looking for a quiet beach to learn at. Is it really that gross?” asked one Reddit user.

“Yes, it is that gross. The upside is that thanks to my surfing Imperial Beach waters in the early 2000s I am now immune to most blood born pathogens and diseases,” replied u/catiekeurig/
