For the first time ever, two humpback whales were photographed having sex, and according to a recently published study, they were both guys.
We actually just wrote a thing about gay animals, though we didn’t know this could extend into the ocean. I guess there’s no reason it wouldn’t.
The photographers, Lyle Krannichfeld and Brandi Romano, noticed the two whales approach their boat off the coast of Maui in 2022. One of the whales appeared healthy and was clearly the aggressor. The other whale seemed emaciated and sick and tried to get the hell out.
“It is possible that [the sick whale] approaching and circling the boat was an attempt to block or seek refuge from [the healthy male],” the report states.
Krannichfeld and Romano sat and watched for about a half hour.
Anyway, the healthy whale had his dick out and “penetrated the second whale” while holding it “in place with its pectoral fins.” The report adds that “The penetrations were shallow.”

Once he was done, he got up and left. Typical dude.
While the social behaviors of humpback whales have been studied extensively, very little is known about their sexual habits, and “sightings of humpback whale penises are few and far between,” according to Science Alert.
